THE NIGHT IT HAPPENED

                      PART TWELVE  (last episode)

I arranged for a hotel where we’ll spend some hours before going over to Fabian’s house at night to complete our mission. Last night? I really do not want to talk about it. I did what I did with regrets but I’m into the mess already and I’ll have to complete my mission. After today, whatever is going to happen, whatever consequences I am going to face, I am ready inasmuch as Fabian has gone down.

“Jaja, we have done every necessary preparation and whatever happened is all because of this situation. Are you sure you are ready for this?” “Ha, Funmi, you are the one I am supposed to be asking this. Jaja is never afraid to take any man down. If you are ready, I am ready too.” I nodded. Jaja continued “hope you are not so tired from last night’s kukere dance” “Jaja shut up” I snapped! “Whatever happened last night was all because of this mission. After this mission, there is nothing, absolutely nothing between us. I have a lot to deal with already” and I went in to get my bag ready, Jaja was already with his bag waiting for me.

We got to Enugu early enough so we decided to rest in our hotel, Jaja was surprised I had made all the arrangements even while we were in the village, “don’t worry Jaja, I have got everything covered.” We went into the room and decided to take some rest. I went into the bathroom to take a shower before I get some sleep.  Before I stepped out of the bathroom, Jaja was already fast asleep. I felt a sharp pain in my stomach again and again. I decided to wake Jaja up so we could go to a nearby hospital, just then, I slumped.

I was in so much pain when I woke up, especially from the side of my stomach that was operated on. “Hey, thank God. You are awake, Funmi, how do you feel now?” Jaja asked with some relief and excitement. “I feel so much pains Jaja, what happened to me?” Jaja got closer to me and told me how he heard the sound of my fall on the floor so loud; he had to rush me down to this hospital because I passed off. Just then I got the shocker from Jaja, “Dr. Wilfred assured me that you’ll be fine.” I attempted to jump up as I heard the name but the pain was much, “Dr. who?” I asked, “Dr. Wilfred, na the name wey he tell me be that na. Why are you looking this lost, do you know him?”

I waved him off and made to lie my head down when he came in. “Hello Grace, thank God you are finally awake. How do you feel now?” Jaja was looking on as we spoke, “I am fine Dr. Wilfred, thank you so much. How have you been?” “I am fine my dear. But we spoke some days back and you didn’t relate it to me that you were coming to Enugu, that’s not good enough.” “I am so sorry Doc., I was to come for a Church program but here am I.”

“Well, there is a bad news. We lost the Baby. He was dead already before you got here, maybe that explains the pains you felt yesterday, we had to operate on you to take him out. Other than that, you’re perfectly okay, just heal up and you need so much rest.” I turned away in a way they’ll think I was bereaved, “I am sorry for another loss Grace, but I assure you, you’ll get good news very soon. Just ensure you take proper care of yourself.” Dr. Wilfred left the room and Jaja came to me, “No wonder that Dr. was shocked yesterday when I brought you in, he gave you immediate attention even before asking for payment. After everything, I met him to talk about the bills, but he told me the bills were already settled. So I wondered, by whom? I never knew you both were acquainted with each other.”

“Yes Jaja, Dr. Wilfred was our family Doctor and he is a very nice man. But, how did you know this hospital?” “Oh, one of the attendants gave me the description to this place. I was so scared. Sorry for your loss, thank God you are alive.” I didn’t say anything more. “Finally, this child is out of me, he probably knew he wasn’t wanted. I am sorry child, but you made the right choice not to come into this world.” I shed tears again.

“Grace, remember you have to take care of yourself very well. Don’t worry much about your Baby that decided not to show up, you’ll have some good reasons to be happy again soon. Be careful!” “Thank you so much doc., God blesses you.” For over how many months, that was the first time I had mentioned God.” We got into the car and Jaja drove back to the hotel. “Jaja, I think we have to go fulfill our mission before we head home. Tonight, we have to move there, we finish up what we came for and leave.”

“No Funmi, we have to go home. You can’t do anything in this your condition. I won’t let you do anything.” “And what are you talking as? We are going there tonight and that is final.” The attendant came in with the food we ordered for. I went into the bathroom to urinate. We ate and decided to discuss but I slept off even before we started to. Jaja carried me to the car, got our bags and drove us home. I woke up in my room in my village. I was so furious at Jaja but couldn’t do anything; “I am sorry; I had to drug you to sleep so that I can bring you home. I passed through Fabian’s house and the gateman told me that Fabian had a terrible accident and it’ll take a miracle for him to come out alive. So, I felt the battle was already fought, I decided to drive you straight home.”

“Thank you so much Jaja, I am indeed very grateful.” I was pacified by that information.

Later that night, my mother told me why the child had to die, “I knew that child was Fabian’s and the only way to take him out was to make Jaja sleep with you. Since he was conceived out of adultery, the same way he had to go.” I was now grateful I had sex with Jaja, it was worth it after all. Now, this is the end for me. “We had to attack Fabian from here when he was least expecting it. He had a terrible accident and will definitely not make it. So relax my child, the battle with Fabian has been fought and won.”

“Thank you so much mama” I said and made to sleep but other thoughts came in.  “Now that Fabian is no more, I think it’s time for a new beginning or better still I end it all.” I thought. Maybe I should just get married to Jaja and move on; that will mean going back to serving the goddess. Hummm!

“Sister Grace, there is a man outside that wants to see you. He said he came all the way from Enugu and that he has an important message for you.” “Enugu?” It was shocking. I wasn’t expecting anyone from Enugu and other than Fabian who is even hospitalized and Dr. Wilfred; I don’t know anyone else over there. “Okay Rose, I’ll go and attend to him, just get back to what you were doing.” Rose left my room, I was still pondering on who could be outside there looking for me. I got up from the bed, went through to the sitting to pip outside, “Dr Wilfred? What in heaven’s name is Dr. Wilfred doing here” I murmured. “He has never been to my village, how did he even know his way down here?” I know there was something certainly but I couldn’t get at it. “Could it be that Fabian is dead?” I brightened up a bit at the thought.

I went back in and dressed up properly. When I stepped out I saw Dr. Wilfred just by the door and exchanged pleasantries with him; “good afternoon Dr. Wilfred, how are you doing? You’re highly welcome doc.” I offered him a sit inside the visitor’s room. “I know you’re shocked or should I say surprised to see me. How are you and how’s everybody?” “Doc, we are all fine oh. Of course, it’s a surprise and I wonder, how did you find your way down here?” “Oh, it was quite difficult but you’re a popular person, virtually everyone knows you, Grace the wonderful singer, blessed with an angelic voice” he said with smiles and we both laughed. “That Grace is long lost” I thought within “the person sitting close to you is evil.” Just then, there was a tap on the door. “Yes, who’s there, please open” I responded “FESTUS”! I screamed and fainted.

Dr. Wilfred didn’t do the mercy killing as he promised. He patiently waited for Festus for another two weeks with prayers and hope while I was away doing so much damage to my soul. “What a wife I have been.” It was within the second week that the miracle happened. He came into the room where Festus was and saw him already awake but couldn’t say anything. They removed the life supporting machine and he could breathe well. Arrangements were immediately made and he was flown to America where he got the better treatment.

“I have come to take you back my Grace, please go in, arrange your things and let’s go back home.” “No Festus, I can’t! This is not the Grace you married, that Grace is long lost Festus, I am already destroyed. I can’t go back with you, not after everything that has happened.” “No Grace, everything will be sorted out and we’ll be fine. Fabian told me everything that happened before he passed on. When you were rushed down to our hospital, I was there but didn’t want to show up; I wanted to watch everything that was happening.”

“Fabian is dead?” “Yes, he couldn’t make it; he said he was sorry for everything. He told us all that had transpired between you and the level it got to. You got yourself into this diabolical mess Grace? How could you? After all that God has done for us, you abandoned God just for one mistake? I am so disappointed at you. You need to go back to God immediately before it gets too late. If the world gets to know about this nonsense, you’re done for; the career you have labored to build will crash!” I was crying all along and all I could say was “I am sorry Festus” and he replied “I have forgiven you already my Grace, go tell it to God now.”

My dear friend, are you happy for me? I know I do not deserve to be redeemed, how do I move on from here?
